Open from icon on desk top
There may be a shortcut to open the PowerPoint program from an icon on your desktop. The icon differs for different versions of PowerPoint. It doesn't matter too much which version of PowerPoint you have. The icon may look like the one on the left or the one above. If any of these icons are on your desktop, you may double click them to open PowerPoint.
If you do not have an icon on your desktop and would like to create one for future use please see the section below at the end of the 'Open Using Start Button' text.
Open Using Start button
Left mouse click on the START button. This is located in the bottom left corner of your windows screen. This button may be slighty different to the one shown depending on which version of Windows you are using (see the image below for earlier Windows version).
A window will appear providing various options from which it is possible to select. You may see the PowerPoint icon in the frequently used listing which appears directly above the Start button. However, if others are not using the computer it is more probable that you cannot see any shortcut to open PowerPoint.
At the bottom of the window is a link to All Programs. Click on this and a new window will appear listing all the programs currently installed on the computer. Search for the Microsoft PowerPoint listing and click to open PowerPoint.
To create a shortcut icon on your desk top: To create a shortcut icon on your desk top locate the PowerPoint listing in the Start Menu (as above) and right mouse click on it. Hover over the Send To option in the window that appears and then select Desktop from the listing given. Powerpoint can now be opened by double clicking the newly created icon on your desktop.

PowerPoint 2000
In PowerPoint 2000, you will see the opening window for PowerPoint as in the image on the left.
Select the blank presentation option.
If you want PowerPoint to always open with a blank presentation option then check the box at the bottom 'Don't show this dialog box again' before selecting OK.
Click on OK.
PowerPoint XP
In PowerPoint XP, you will be taken to the main PowerPoint screen (see image left). In the rightmost pane is an option to select a blank presentation that doesn't quite do what it says. On selecting this, you will be presented with another range of options in the rightmost pane: select the completely blank one (top left) from the content layouts section. The main part of the screen will then display as a completely blank canvas on which we can begin to build a new PowerPoint presentation.
